Metals & mining
Gävleborg’s diverse and highly advanced steel industry consists of metal giants, such as Sandvik in Sandviken and Ovaco in Hofors, hundreds of small to medium suppliers and subcontractors, and support organizations, such as Triple Steelix. Around 80 percent of the products manufactured in Gävleborg are exported abroad. Gävleborg has well-developed industrial infrastructure, including power, transportation and communications, and extensive unexploited mineral deposits.
Mining potential in Gävleborg
Gävleborg’s metal ore and precious metal deposits are underexploited and large-scale mining in the region is still in its infancy. There are several prospecting surveys underway in Northern Gävleborg. For example, six ongoing prospecting surveys in Ovanåker municipality have identified significant deposits of graphite, vanadium and iron. The deposits are as yet unexploited and have large potential for investment in the local mining industry.
Sweden boasts Europe’s richest mineral fields, and is the dominant internal EU supplier of iron ore, the second largest provider of silver, gold, lead and zinc and the third largest copper producer. The country has world-leading mining expertise, excellent metals and mining infrastructure and a long history of political and economic stability.
Sandvik is a global high-technology and engineering Group, which was founded in Sandviken in 1862 and still has significant operations in the town.
The company has around 6,200 employees based in Sandviken, where its state-of-the-art production facilities manufactures various products and tools for modern industrial applications around the world. Sandviken is still home to some of Sandvik’s Group functions, and is the global headquarters of the business areas Sandvik Materials Technology, Sandvik Machining Solutions and the product area Sandvik Coromant, Sandvik Hard Materials and Sandvik Process Systems.
Sandviken is also home to one of Europe’s largest Research & Development centres for advanced metallic materials and special alloys, which has built up around Sandvik’s operations.
Triple Steelix is a cluster that works to strengthen the already successful steel industry in Gävleborg and Dalarna. The cluster builds networks, organizes industry meetings and seminars, provides financial support and manages projects that aim to develop the industry. Triple Steelix also works with the entire steel industry and its supply chain to support the research and development of successful products and services.
Triple Steelix members include Sandvik Materials Technology, Fagersta Stainless, Ovako Erasteel and 720 small and medium-large companies in the region. Additionally, the cluster brings industry together with society and research in Central Sweden by including the regional authorities (Region Gävleborg) and the University of Gävle.
Triple Steelix is owned by Jernkontoret (the Swedish Steel Producers’ Association), which supports the steel industry with material and process development, energy efficiency and the development of more sustainable practices, and industry-focused research.
Paper and packaging industry
Gävleborg’s paper and packaging industry has always utilized innovative state-of-the-art techniques to produce high quality paper and packaging for regional and global markets. The industry has now evolved to focus on producing premium and prestige products, which are of the highest quality in the world.
Iggesund Paperboard is part of the Holmen Group (link to: www.holmen.com/en) and is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high quality virgin fibre paperboard for packaging and graphics applications. The company has been based in Iggesund since 1685, and the town is still home to the Iggesund Paperboard’s headquarters and paperboard operations, where it employs over 900 people.
The Iggesund mill is one of the most advanced, fully integrated pulp and paperboard mills in the world. The company invests heavily in its production processes to attract and retain customers with the highest quality requirements. Invercote paperboard is produced in Iggesund, which is customised for various end-user applications and sold to over 100 countries around the world. Invercote is often used as high quality prestige packaging, such as champagne bottle and cosmetics packaging.

SenseAir is an innovative and world-leading manufacturer of infrared carbon dioxide sensors and controllers, with over 100 people employed at its global headquarters and production facilities in Delsbo. Around a third of the company’s employees in Delsbo are active in Research & Development, which makes the town a global centre for infrared gas measurement technology.
SenseAir has long-term plans to continue to develop its activities in Delsbo together with Fibre Optic Valley in Hudiksvall, and the local and regional authorities.
