Steel company Ovako continues to invest in Gävleborg
Ovako has invested SEK 300 million in Hofors over the past decade to meet the increased demand from the wind power industry.
Increasing investments in larger wind turbines around the world have fueled the demand for large steel rings and ball bearings. Ovako’s investment in its steel mill in Horfors is in response to this demand.
The investments have allowed the company to double the size of its rings to up to four meters in diameter. Such diameter rings are used in the production of large 3 MW wind turbines, which can meet the annual electricity needs of 750 homes.
Ovako’s steel is 100 percent scrap based, and boasts significantly better mechanical properties compared to conventional steel. Ovako Steel ball bearings for example, can handle higher pressure and longer periods of mechanical stress without service. This is particularly important in offshore wind farms and other places that are difficult to access.
