Direct shipping route established to USA from the Port of Gävle

The new direct route involves shipping newspaper from the Port of Gävle to Philadelphia on USA’s east coast.

The establishment of the direct regular shipping route will reduce logistical costs for companies in Gävleborg, and help to promote their competitiveness. The route is managed by the Dutch shipping company Spliethoff.

“We have to do what we can to retain and develop the region’s industry. The Port of Gävle has consequently set the objective to develop the direct shipping routes it offers, and is working to ensure that the direct route to USA continues,” says Håkan Bergström, Marketing Manager, Port of Gävle.

Such a route has been facilitated by the construction of a new 12,000 m2 warehouse, which the Port of Gävle built in the summer of 2013 to support the transfer and storage of cargo at the port. The warehouse is situated 20 m from the dock and is adjacent to a railway line to ensure that logistics are handled as efficiently and sustainably as possible.

“We have allocated half the warehouse to this type of shipments, which can store up to 20,000 tons,” says Håkan Bergström.
